news * July 2005 * * * * * * * Greetings everyone, I'd like to begin by extending my deepest sympathies and prayers to all our friends in London and throughout Great Britain. It takes great courage to carry on when fear of this magnitude is generated. In 2001 the people of New York found the courage; today the people of London have found the courage. Indeed, people all around the globe find the courage every day to get up and carry on despite their fears and the countless other challenges they face. I honor your courage. A friend from Louisville, Kentucky, is a London native married to a U.S. citizen. She has lived in the States for many, many years. A week after the first bombing she flew to London to support her brother's family because her sister-in-law has cancer and needs help. This woman was a small child when London was bombed during WWII, and she remembers it vividly. When she told me she was going to London no matter what she said, "You can't let fear run your life." Helen Keller became blind and deaf at a very young age, yet thanks to the love and patience of her friend and teacher, Annie Sullivan, she learned to speak, attended school, and became one of our wisest teachers. She had this to say about security: "Security is mostly superstition. It does not exist in Nature. Nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing." I pray for the day all of us realize we are part of One Whole, the day we claim our freedom to understand our wholeness and connection in our own way, and allow the same freedom to everyone else. Security, such as it is, can only come from true freedom. * * * * * * * Please note: the Water blessing date I sent you earlier this week was in error - the actual date of the global prayer for water is today, July 24. My apologies for not checking the information better before sending it out. If you do not read this on July 24 and do your blessing on the 25th (or even later), the waters of the world will welcome your prayers just the same. They will not be wasted! For reasons I do not understand, it lost about half of itself on its way to you --- both times. Rather than send it a third time hoping it would arrive intact (and especially since I didn't want to drive you nuts when I didn't know what was causing the problem), I am changing how the newsletter is provided to you. (If you would like to read the entire May 15 issue, please click here: http://www.featherhawk.com/back_issues/May_15_2005.htm) Starting this month you will receive an introductory email that includes a brief "hello," a table of contents with a short description of each article, and links to the website where you can read individual articles or the complete issue if you wish. If you have any questions, suggestions or comments about the articles or the essences themselves, please feel free to send them on. I'll be including testimonials in future issues, so let me know about your experiences, along with permission to use your comments, and I'll share them on the website and in the newsletter. Thanks! (Please note: featherhawk has the final word on which comments will be included and which will not, and there is no guarantee your testimonial will be used.) many blessings, ***(((((((((((((((((((((((((^.^.^.^.^.^.^)))))))))))))))))))))))))*** Table of Contents1. Nanci's Rant on "Consumer" vs. "Customer""Language is the bridge between the uncreated and the created worlds. It is both the ultimate reality and the instrument through which reality is brought forth." --Parabola One of the most powerful tools we have for creating our lives every day is our words, and I have a major pet peeve about one word I see and hear every day in the media. The word is consumer. As the proprietor of a business that sells consumable products, it may seem foolishly counterproductive to have a pet peeve about this word, and, well, I have one. Why? Because in today's world of endless marketing spin, the implication is that you and I were created for the sole purpose (soul purpose?) of buying everything in sight and, furthermore, this is somehow a really good thing. I beg to differ. Allow me to share one dictionary's definition of *consume* and its various cousins: *Consume* 1. to destroy, as by burning. 2. to waste; spend. 3. to devour or absorb. *Consumer* one that consumes, especially using products or services for personal needs. *Consumerism* organized activity promoting the welfare of consumers. Ever heard of the computer game, Pac Man? If you remember way back then, you may recall the little Pac Man character moving rapidly around the screen, devouring everything in its path. Now THAT is a *consumer* in action. Mindless. Driven. Obsessed. I don't know about you, but I don't like being thought of as one who destroys, wastes and devours. "Using products or services for personal needs" makes sense, yet the use of the word in advertising seems to be directed more at creating a false demand for every fad rather than serving anyone's true needs. And certainly the definition of *consumerism* does not reflect my everyday experience of mass media advertising. For "the welfare of consumers"? I don't think so. Do you and I exist only to devour stuff so we can buy more? No, we do not. We are intelligent, feeling, thinking, co-creative people with values and character, fully capable of making choices based on our knowledge, experience and personal exploration. And we can do so without being bribed, frightened or manipulated into buying stuff just because it is there. Of course, I could just be jealous. It would be pretty awesome to wake up tomorrow and discover featherhawk with the brand recognition of a Nike or an Oreo, not to mention thousands of dollars worth of orders waiting in my PayPal® account And, as amazing as that would be, I'd like to think I would still be able to maintain a personal connection with my customers (now there is a word I can relate to!); real people looking for solutions to challenging life issues in difficult times. I love to hear when an essence and a customer come together and magic happens. And if the magic doesn't happen, it opens up new areas of exploration and leads to valuable lessons. featherhawk essences are about discovery and inspiration and growth and embracing our wholeness. After all is said and done, I want you to know you are seen as customers and clients, people to be served with products I love and believe in. Never just a *consumer*. Your feedback is welcomed. Thanks for listening. (to the top) (to the table of contents) * * * * * * * 3. InspirationWhat inspires me today is the incredible grace and resilience of the human spirit. In London, in New York, in Madrid, in Iraq, and in so many places around the world where fighting and other kinds of devastation, big and small, are a daily occurrence, people somehow get up in the morning and carry on. We are amazing beings, we humans. And the vast majority of us, everywhere around the world, are good and kind and we care about each other in ways we may not even realize until we are called to our hearts by some event or experience we never could have expected. At that moment we reach out without even thinking about it. We look around to see what needs to be done and do it. Send money. Give blood. Deliver dinner. Hold a hand. Our humanity is what brings us through crises, what connects us to one another and to the Earth and all of her inhabitants: plant, animal, mineral, human. Thanks for listening.
