* * * * * Body, Mind & Soul: The Whole of You The Chartres Labyrinth, Part 1 The science and magic of sacred geometry has been part of the human experience since forever. Knowledge of form, pattern, structure, and number (in its purest form which is different from number as quantifier of things), is intrinsic in us, and we naturally create structures in our surroundings that conform to these principles. One ancient expression of this knowledge is the labyrinth. You may have seen a labyrinth in your community - they are being installed on church and university campuses, in backyards, and at retreat centers. Portable labyrinths give people who don't have a labyrinth in their community an opportunity to experience the adventure. It is even possible to "walk" a labyrinth printed on a sheet of paper. Set the paper labyrinth on the table in front of you, and, using your fingers, walk along the path. You can literally "walk," changing from one finger to another. Or you can use one finger and slide it along the labyrinth pathway. What is a labyrinth? A labyrinth is a maze, a series of pathways that wind around, often in a circular pattern. While a labyrinth is always a maze, a maze is not always a labyrinth! Let me make the distinction. A maze is intended to confound and confuse. It usually has high, impenetrable walls and paths that lead to dead ends. A labyrinth, on the other hand, has only one path: you follow it in to the center, and you follow it back out to the entryway. Unlike a maze, you can see the entire labyrinth from the inside or outside. In this issue of The Essence of Life we're going to explore the eleven path, or Chartres labyrinth, named for the one found in the Chartres Cathedral in France. Walking the Labyrinth When you walk a labyrinth, whether on the Earth or on a sheet of paper, you are traveling a singular path to your inner sanctuary. It is a like a moving meditation, that takes you deep within for the answers that dwell in your inner knowing. As you prepare to enter, set your intention for the journey. Perhaps you are seeking an answer to a burning question, advice about a situation in your life, or clarification of some issue that you're not sure about. Any thought or question you can formulate can be taken into the Labyrinth for insight. The Chartres Labyrinth is especially useful for balancing and integrating experience and logic, the Inner Female and Inner Male. If you were to place this labyrinth over the top of your head, you would see it divides your brain into four quadrants. Since you won't be able to hold a piece of paper over your head and walk the labyrinth with your finger, set the paper down on the table with the entrance to the labyrinth in front of you. It is as if you are facing yourself and traveling inward. How to Walk the Labyrinth Place any finger at the entrance of the labyrinth. You will "step into" the front right quadrant of your brain. Remember, you are facing yourself, so this "right side" of the labyrinth is directly across from the left side of your body. The Right Brain is the Female side, where intuition and creativity thrive, where feeling and experience are paramount. As you glide along the path, you will notice that you move into the back quadrant of the Female side, then dance briefly into the back quadrant of the left, or Male, side, then the front quadrant of the Male side. You return to the Female side before traveling into the Male side. In the Female side, you are contemplating the issue you asked for clarity about when you entered the Labyrinth. When you step into the Male side, you enter the logical, analytical part of your brain. This part of you to thinks about your issue, dissects it, looks at the pieces parts. And just before you step into your center, you come to two segments of the pathway that are exactly divided between Male and Female. So you enter the sanctuary of Self in a state of balance. I'm going to leave you in the center to contemplate your Self and your issue and we'll continue this exploration in the next issue of The Essence of Life!
