Welcome to the first featherhawk newsletter of 2005! I trust you had a safe and wonderful Christmas and holiday season, and the year, so far, finds you well and settling into the new energies and experiences that are unfolding.

My commitment to you this year is to write a newsletter twice a month, tentatively the 2nd and 4th Sundays. Since making a commitment like this practically gives me heart palpitations, I will also ask your indulgence for those times (like today, the fifth Sunday :-o) when the schedule varies a bit.

This is a pivotal year, I believe, with many opportunities for all of us to choose our path to wholeness and wonder with joy, thanksgiving, and compassion; to know, once and for all, that we are One.

To steal a line from Star Wars, "May the Force Be With Us!"

many blessings,
nanci

* * * * * * *

This is a question I hear often: "There are so many essences! How do I know what to choose?" In this edition of the newsletter, I'll offer a couple of the techniques I've used over the years. Then, in the next few issues, you'll find more techniques and helpful hints to make it easier to select essences and make a difference for yourself and your loved ones.

Let me start with a couple of the philosophies that guide essence use. Both of these approaches work well. For those who tend to be more matter-of-fact and linear in their thinking, the first technique (from Dr. Bach) may be your best choice. For those who have learned to trust the unseen aspects of themselves, the second may be a better choice. And, rather than put yourselves into any kind of box whatsoever, please play with both approaches and see what works for you.

Relying on the Definitions

The first philosophy was developed by Dr. Edward Bach, the British physician who is considered the founder of flower essence therapy. He was, himself, highly intuitive and was said to be able to glance at a person and immediately discern the remedy they needed based on his years getting to know his own patients, and observing the flowers in their natural habitats.

Dr. Bach was also deeply committed to developing a healing system that anyone could use, which is why he invested much of his research in refining the essence definitions. Once he was satisfied the work was complete, he destroyed his previous speculations so there would be no confusion about the ultimate descriptions of each essence.

The Bach system is based on understanding the relationship of the essences to the behavior or situation you are working with. Here are some examples of choices you could make from the featherhawk essences. Do thoughts repeat over and over in your head? This could signal a need for White Chestnut. Do you focus on small details and miss the big picture? Hawk flies to your rescue. Do you make decisions based on what others think, ignoring your own thoughts and feelings? Check out Cerato. Are you afraid to express your emotions for fear they will fly out of control and even hurt someone? Take Cherry Plum. Do you feel isolated and alone? Circle restores unity and connection.

The basic technique is very simple: read the descriptions and take the one(s) that most closely matches your own situation, behavior, or feelings. You can apply this to your own needs as well as your family, friends or clients, and to your animal friends.

"Hello!" you may be shouting. "There are over 280 featherhawk essences!!! Am I supposed to read all of them every time I want to take an essence??!!!?" Slow down! Yes, there are a lot of them, AND there is a solution for this, too. First, scan one of the lists of essences from the website (see "featherhawk essences by name" at http://www.featherhawk.com/essences_intro.htm#anchor595274) or look over the repertory brochure. I promise you, your attention will be drawn to the one(s) you most need to check out. This is an excellent exercise in trusting your intuition.

In addition, over the next month, I will be finalizing the Themes and Soul Issues page. This information will help narrow your focus and choose among likely essences for your current situation. I'll have more on this in the next issue.

Another Way to Choose Essences

In addition to the method described above, another way to choose essences is to ask your body for guidance. There are many techniques you can use such as Muscle Testing and several forms of Dowsing. Two techniques are included in this issue to get you started. Look for details about additional techniques in coming newsletters.

Why would you ask your body for guidance? I believe your body's innate wisdom can tell you a lot about your well-being and how to create balance and harmony for yourself. When you rely on your body's wisdom, you step away from the world of intellect and logic and move into relationship with your inner knowing.

With our healthcare system in near chaos, it is more and more important for each of us to recognize we have the innate ability to find our way through the existing maze and zero in on the tools and techniques that truly make a difference rather than just cover up symptoms. Your body is the perfect tool for this.

All of the body wisdom techniques can be used to select among conventional medical options as well as essences, herbs and supplements, and other choices you may wish to make. If you can formulate a question that can be answered "Yes" or "No," these methods can guide you.

P-A-T: "Priority, Appropriate, Tolerate"

These guidelines were developed by Bobbi Brooks and they will help you clarify your choices.

The key to asking your body for guidance is to ask one clear question at a time that can be answered "YES" or "NO." Keep your questions as simple as possible. Also, keep in mind that you want to know if the essence you are checking will support you NOW.

Here are the P-A-T questions:

* "Is (name of the essence) a Priority for me now?" (check),
* "Is (name of the essence) Appropriate for me now?" (check), and
* "Will my body Tolerate (name of the essence) now?" (check).

Check one essence at a time. At the beginning it is a good idea to hold it in your hand or in your lap, if you have the bottle with you. If you are using a list and do not have the physical bottle, either use a pointer (such as a pen or pencil) and point at the essence you want to check, or write the name on a small piece of paper and hold it or put it in your lap while you check. The smallest sticky notes are good for this. You want to be sure you are focused on just one essence at a time.

Now ask, "Does it support me to take this essence now?" If the answer is Yes, take one drop of the essence. When you first begin, it is perfectly OK to ask this one question and act on the answer you receive.

If you want to explore deeper, ask the three P-A-T questions. If the answer to ALL THREE questions is Yes, take a drop of the essence. If the answer to any or all of the questions is No, go to your next essence. This is an important step in discerning what works for you, and it can be a challenge at first to trust that if you get two "Yes" answers and one "No," that that equals an overall NO. Please trust the process.

If you are clear that the answer is Yes and you are checking from the name online or from a brochure, ask if it is appropriate to purchase the essence now. Follow through on your answer.

If you use this simple technique once a day, and take the essences you check for, you will begin to restore order to your body's electrical system, and wholeness to your life. You can expect to see changes in your well-being within a few days, or perhaps 3 or 4 weeks. Some people experience immediate results. Honor your own process and continue to listen to your body.

Here are a couple of body wisdom techniques to get you started. (Of course, if you already have a method that works for you, use it!)

* Checking With Your Fingers and Thumb

1. Begin with your dominant hand (the one you write with and use most often). Touch your thumb to the fingertips of your first two fingers of the same hand, then rub your thumb and fingertips together. Your fingers will automatically move in the way that is most natural for you. Ask your body, "Show me my YES." You may find your thumb circling over your fingers in one direction or the other, or sliding back and forth. Just notice how it feels. Your thumb may slide over your fingers very easily, or you may feel friction, heat or stickiness between your thumb and fingers. Whatever you feel is correct for you. Just notice how your fingers move and feel, then go on to the next step.

2. Now ask your body, "Show me my NO." Notice what your thumb and fingers want to do now. Most likely, your fingers will respond differently than they did when you asked to see your Yes. For example, if your fingers slid easily for Yes, you may feel more friction for No, or vice versa. The direction your fingers move may change for No. You may notice heat or tingling. These are just some things to watch for. Remember to LISTEN TO YOUR OWN BODY. It's telling you the truth.

Practice until you can easily discern the difference between your YES and NO. Whenever you use this technique you can stop and check to remind yourself how your YES and NO feel. Sometimes the difference between the two is very subtle, sometimes it's very obvious. Keep practicing and trust your body's wisdom.

* Muscle Testing (Kinesiology)

Muscle testing, also called kinesiology, lets you discern two responses: YES and NO. If the testing circuit stays strong when you check, it means the answer is YES. If the testing circuit weakens when you check, that means the answer is NO.

You'll find that muscle testing becomes quick and easy with practice, though it may feel awkward at first. Give yourself time to practice and get used to the feel of it.

Here are the basic steps for muscle testing:

If you are right-handed, your right hand is usually your dominant hand and your left hand is your non-dominant hand. If you are left-handed the opposite is true. To simplify this explanation, I will use right hand to mean "dominant," and left hand to mean "non-dominant." If you are left-handed, please adjust the directions. Thank you!

(NOTE: Some of us are wired differently - if this process doesn't work for you as described, try switching hands.)

1. First, touch the thumb and pinky finger of your left (or non-dominant) hand together. These are your circuit fingers. You may touch the tips or pads together, or overlap the fingers.

2. Next, touch the thumb and first finger of your right (or dominant) hand together. Now, insert the right-hand thumb and finger into the circle of your left thumb and pinky. Your wrists will be close together and the first knuckle of the fingers of each hand will be touching.

3. To check, spread your right thumb and finger apart and try to separate the fingers of your left hand. Using equal pressure, try to keep the fingers of your left hand together.

The check is quick and firm, not a battle to see how long it takes to separate the fingers if you just struggle with it enough. Maintain equal, steady pressure in each hand, check firmly and quickly, and release.

4. If your circuit fingers stay connected, that's a YES; if they weaken noticeably or the connection breaks, that's a NO. Your NO may be very obvious, or just a subtle weakening. If you find it hard to tell the difference, ask your body to give you a more obvious NO, and it will do that for you. Muscle testing becomes easier as you practice, pay attention to your body's response, and practice some more!

In the next issue of the newsletter I'll share a few more techniques and we'll explore more steps to take on your way to mastery.

2. Restoring Sanity in January

In the depths of the season of hibernation and introspection it is important to pay attention to your body and mind, and nurture yourself with compassion and joy. Here are a few essences that can help you navigate the winter months.

Introspection

Angelic Carekeeper Enfolding Angelic presence and support. For sheltering innocence. Supports the unfolding of soulular memory (life purpose), integrating it into your present life experience.

Bear Gently opens the heart, allowing the Mind access to the gifts of Spirit by way of the heart center. Helps you listen to your inner environment and give birth to new ideas in peace.

In the Silence SoulutionTM Access inner peace and wisdom. For those precious moments of introspection and self-examination; quiet inner mind chatter and listen to the still small voice within.

Light

Black-eyed Susan The dark is always surrounded by the Light. For looking into your shadow and embracing the emo-tions you find there. You use huge amounts of energy to hide from powerful feelings and keep yourself "under control." Black-eyed Susan helps you recognize and free your feelings, allowing you to tap into a vast reservoir of energy while remaining centered and safe. Opens the heart chakra.

Dandelion Releases tension beginning in your subtle energy field and extending inward to your physical body. Aids in cleansing and detoxifying the Whole of You.

Warmth and Nurturing

Citrine Warms the physical body. Clears thoughtforms and stabilizes emotions, aiding concentration and centeredness. For clearing and aligning the Whole of You, attuning you to your Higher Mind, your God-Self.

Indian Summer "I've got 'ya." Know you are held safe as you prepare for a time of introspection and renewal. Remem-ber the light and warmth of Summer always lives within where you are secure and comfortable. For knowing this is not your "last chance." Aids those who are affected by the cold and darkness of the Winter season, and other "winters" of life.

Honeysuckle Sweet nurturing. Bring sweetness back into your life and give yourself permission to nurture yourself and meet your needs. For learning from the past and releasing your longing for it; for acknowledging the sweetness of the moment.

3. Inspiration

In 1998 I purchased the book, "Making the Gods Work for You," by Caroline W. Casey. I had listened to Ms. Casey's Sounds True tapes called "Inner and Outer Space" and found it fascinating, and wanted to follow up by exploring the book itself. As is often the case for me, once I had it, there it sat. I would pick it up from time to time and refer to some small piece of its information, then back it would go on the shelf.

Until 2 or 3 weeks ago. Now I am devouring it every chance I get. The book offers insights about the signs of the zodiac and the planets in our solar system. And while I am in no immediate danger of grasping the principles of astrology (which have always eluded me, somehow), I have been utterly captivated. After I finish reading it through cover to cover, I will pull out my chart and see how to apply what she says to all those funny squiggles I see so clearly but have never understood.

Caroline Casey is a self-described "Visionary Activist Astrologer." She shares a list of principles at the beginning of the book, and I would like to offer Principle Number Zero as my inspirational quote for the day:

"Believe nothing, entertain possibilities."

And so it is. Venture forth in peace and joy, and entertain those possibilities!

Until next time...
