It is a cold and dreary day, this February 20. Between bouts of writing I've been cleaning my kitchen cabinets. Surely there is an essence for that... :-)

In this issue we continue to explore how to choose essences. I was also contacted by a woman who attended a class a few months back. The participants set an intention, then using dowsing or one of the other body wisdom skills, they chose combinations of essences for each other to support their intention. Beverly shared her story with the featherhawk essences yahoogroup, and I will share it with you here. Pretty cool outcome!

Spring is coming, and I'm looking forward to it!

Keep your eye on your dreams.

many blessings,
nanci

1. Choosing Essences: Listen to Your Body's Wisdom, Part 2

I'll begin with a brief review from the last issue of the newsletter which began with the question, "There are so many essences! How do I know what to choose?"

As described in the last issue, one way to choose essences is to become familiar with the definitions, or to simply read the descriptions and choose the one(s) that seems most appropriate to your situation or the issues you are dealing with.

We also explored the idea of using your body's wisdom for guidance. We looked at "Checking with Fingers and Thumb," a technique that involves moving your thumb over the first two fingers of the same hand and noticing how it feels. Ask your body to show you your Yes and notice how that feels. Then ask your body to show you your No and notice how that feels.

Then we looked at one form of Muscle Testing. Make a "circuit" by connecting the thumb and pinkie finger of your non-dominant hand. Now touch the thumb and first finger of your dominant hand together and insert into the opening created by your other hand. To test, try to separate the fingers of your dominant hand (inside the circuit) at the same time you try to keep your circuit fingers together. Use equal pressure, test quickly and release, and notice what happens with your circuit fingers. If they stay connected, that is a Yes. If they break their connection, that is a No. (To review these two techniques in more depth, please see the January 30th edition http://www.featherhawk.com/back_issues/january_30_2005.htm.)

Dowsing with a Pendulum

In this issue, I'll introduce you to dowsing with a pendulum and a simple technique I call "Body Forward, Body Back."

The pendulum is my favorite tool, and I began using it in 1987. I was miserably unsuccessful for about six months because it was way too easy to let my mind interfere. At first the thing wouldn't move at all. Then it moved in such a small way I couldn't tell Yes from No. Finally I surrendered to the process, and began to have success. I'll share the basic technique with you, then give you some pointers so you can (hopefully) avoid some of the frustration I experienced!

To begin, you can use any object that hangs on a string or chain: a button on a thread, a pendant, a wet tea bag... anything that dangles and can swing freely will do. You can also invest in a "real" pendulum - and you should be able to find one of those on the internet or perhaps at a local health food or New Age store. The one I use is from Kroeger Herb Products and costs about $18. It is stainless steel, which remains clear of other people's energy, and it is small and easy to carry. To purchase, check out Hanna's Herb Shop: http://www.hannasherbshop.net/cgi-bin/sc/productsearch.cgi?storeid=*1241fdb681551b7ca751c5. She also has a book about the pendulum, available on the same page. (FYI: I have no financial connection with Hanna's Herb Shop.)

And, as I said, you can use anything that dangles, so don't wait for your pendulum to arrive before you begin to practice. Here is a basic introduction to dowsing.

First, get used to holding it, keep it with you in your pocket or purse so it becomes acquainted with your energy (not recommended if you are using a wet tea bag...). Hold the pendulum in the hand that is most comfortable for you. I recommend that you hold it between your thumb and first two fingers. This gives you a balanced connection because your first finger is negative, your middle finger is positive, and your thumb is neutral.

There are several ways to determine your Yes and No. Holding one hand palm up, extend the middle finger. Yes, it looks like you are giving someone the bird. You simply want to have the middle finger as isolated as possible. If you are more comfortable simply spreading your fingers wide apart and focusing on your middle finger, this will work, too. Just be clear in your focus.

As I said above, the middle finger is positive, so when you hold your pendulum over that finger, you will see your positive or Yes swing. There is not one "correct" Yes pattern. There is YOUR Yes pattern. Just like the "checking with fingers and thumb" procedure, notice what happens. The pendulum may swing in a circle one way or the other, it may swing side to side, it may swing back and forth. It may do something else altogether. Notice. If it seems reluctant to move, ask it to show you your Yes.

Some people get an immediate response, others (like me) take their sweet time seeing a definite swing. Practice, and be patient.

To find your negative or No swing, hold the pendulum over your first finger. This is a negative energy (negative being opposite of positive, as in electrical flow, not negative like bad). If your Yes was a clockwise circle, your No may be a counter-clockwise circle or a back and forth. If your Yes was back and forth, your No may be side to side or a circle in one direction or the other. Again, you are looking for YOUR pattern, not some non-existent "correct" pattern.

If you have trouble discerning your Yes and No swing, blow three times on the pendulum, gently, to clear it. If you are trying too hard, the pendulum will not be able to get through your determination to see it move. Trust me, I know this from experience! Shake your arm out, take a few deep breaths, relax, and try again. Sometimes it is better to just walk away and pick it up again later.

Make sure you are grounded and present in your body. If you are up in your head, you will not be able to receive and discern the answers. And most important, RELAX. Hold your hand in a comfortable position with your wrist straight or slightly bent. If your hand is rigid, your wrist is bent over (like a swan's neck, for example) or you are holding your arm in a tense or uncomfortable position, the energy cannot move.

And remember that the energy is moving, which will cause your hand and/or arm to move. When you ask your question, the Universe provides the answer. As the energy of the answer moves into your body, it causes your body to generate your Yes and No swing. "Trying" to hold your hand or arm perfectly still is counterproductive. You want to be loose and relaxed.

Another tip: drink some water. You are checking the status of your electrical system when you dowse, and just like the battery in your car, if your water level is low, the electrical current doesn't flow properly.

Stay out of your head with this and all the body wisdom techniques. If you are genuinely interested in discovering what will be support you, your pendulum or other tool or technique will serve you well. If you simply want to justify what you have already decided to do, DON'T USE THESE TOOLS. It is an insult to your own divine intelligence, and a misuse of the techniques. When you have already decided what the answer is, they will give you the answer you want rather than argue with your free will. So, just do what it is you want to do and take responsibility for your choices and actions. Don't pretend to use your pendulum or other body wisdom skill to give you permission to do what you are going to do anyway... then blame a poor outcome on the tool.

Most of all, be patient with yourself as you learn this new skill. In the next issue we will look at the special technique of asking questions using the pendulum - or any of the body wisdom skills. Asking appropriate questions or making appropriate statements to discern answers is tremendously important as you learn to dowse whether you are using your fingers, a pendulum, or any other technique.

Body Forward, Body Back

This is a simple technique you can use anywhere without drawing a lot of attention to yourself. If you want to know if an essence, a supplement, a food, or anything else is appropriate for you, hold it up against your solar plexus (at the bottom of your sternum or breast bone, where the ribs separate). Ask your question or make a statement that can be responded to with a Yes or No, and watch what your body does. If it moves forward, that is Yes. If it moves backward, that is a No. I find this is usually a subtle yet very noticeable movement.

If you cannot hold the object (perhaps you are asking about a new car or a trip to the Caribbean), write it down on a piece of paper and hold the paper to your solar plexus. Ask your question, and observe what happens.

Beverly Quits Smoking

And here is a story of what is possible when you use your own body's intelligence. I taught a basic essence class at the Botland Food Co-op in Bardstown, Kentucky a few months back. After discussing the basics of essence work and introducing some of the body wisdom skills, the participants set an intention for themselves, then checked each other for an essence combination to support their intention. Just recently I heard from one of the participants, Beverly:

"This is Beverly from Botland food coop and when we did our session at the store I wanted to let you know that I quit smoking Thanksgiving without any difficulties and have not wanted a cig. since. It is like I never smoked... I used Angelica and Full Moon. I had smoked for 41 years and never tried to stop. I loved smoking and defended smokers rights to the end... Wanted to thank you, Beverly"

When I asked permission to share her story, Beverly sent me this email: "Sure because the point is people keep asking me what I did to get to this point. I just asked my guides and angels to help to the next level. I did not mention smoking. I asked for a healing this is what happened."

The important thing to remember here is that she set her intention for healing and moving to the next level, then she was checked for essences. While I can see how Angelica (For creating a living relationship with the angelic realm and connecting with your inner self, especially during times of transition.) and Full Moon (For integrating information and experience. Gather up loose ends, come to closure and move on. Catalyst and booster for other essences and vibrational remedies.) would contribute to letting go of smoking, these essences are not specific to quitting smoking. They are specific to Beverly's request for healing.

When you find your own technique for discerning answers, whether it is muscle testing, reading the definitions, dowsing, or simply trusting your intuition, you open yourself to the Infinite, to the Source of your own unique answers.

I've said many times over the years that essences (and all natural healing methods, really) treat the Whole of You, not your symptoms or diagnosis. There isn't an essence for quitting smoking, per se, though there is a range of essences that would support that process better than others. There is an essence (or essences) that will support YOU to quit smoking when you are clear in your request and desire for healing.

(Note about Themes and Soul Issues. In the last edition of featherhawk news I promised a preliminary look at some themes and soul issues and the essences that might be most appropriate for them. Alas, I have not completed this work in progress, and plan to have some information for you in an upcoming issue. Thanks for your patience!)

2. Restoring Sanity in February

As we begin to rouse ourselves from our Winter quiet time, we want to look at stimulating and cleansing, letting go of any lethargy we may have gathered to us over the Winter season. (Those of you who live in warmer climes may not experience Winter by way of snow and ice and cold, and the season still has its effects on you.)

Cricket Stop fiddling your life away. For trusting your intui-tion and personal rhythm enough to take the next leap, know-ing you will land safely. Risk singing the song of your spirit. Supports strength and flexibility in the legs.

Hematite Promotes clarity in all things mental, including an understanding that all mental things can become limitations if held within the mind! Draws heat from the body, especially when the heat is caused by stuck mental energy. For transforming negativity and embracing possibility.

Redwood The words I heard when approaching the circle of redwoods where this essence originated: "Circle of Trees, Circle of Nations." For recognizing the unity of all Life and the power of close-knit community ties. Acknowledge yourself as fully Human and fully Divine, an integral part of All That Is. Allows access to your ancient wisdom.

Birthright SoulutionTM For reclaiming your right to be who you are, where you are, NOW. Seven within the One: aligns and balances the chakras.
Includes the following featherhawk essences: Amethyst, Catalpa Tree Flower, Eagle, Heather, Resurrection, and Song of the Earth

These two, from the January list, are still valuable tools for moving towards Spring...

Black-eyed Susan The dark is always surrounded by the Light. For looking into your shadow and embracing the emo-tions you find there. You use huge amounts of energy to hide from powerful feelings and keep yourself "under control." Black-eyed Susan helps you recognize and free your feelings, allowing you to tap into a vast reservoir of energy while remaining centered and safe. Opens the heart chakra.

Dandelion Releases tension beginning in your subtle energy field and extending inward to your physical body. Aids in cleansing and detoxifying the Whole of You.

3. Inspiration

First a correction to the January 30 issue: "Believe nothing, entertain possibilities," is Principle Number Zero, not number One. Sorry!

For several months I have been reading "The Biology of Transcendence" by Joseph Chilton Pearce. Where I usually fly through a book and move on to the next one, this has totally captured my attention and I am taking my time, reading and re-reading, attempting to grasp the significance of his wonderful ideas and information.

If you have not read it, you simply must! Especially if you are a parent or planning to become a parent ever in your life. Inspiring and eye-opening in its scope of information, Mr. Pearce explores how our brains develop, what is the most natural learning progression for our children, and how brain development is hindered by the very institutions we rely on to teach and nurture us, including education and religion.

It is a complex examination, and I cannot do it justice here in a few words. Perhaps you will gain some insight into his work if I share one of his experiences with you.

At one point in his career, Mr. Pearce was researching the importance of play. "I spent several months on the question, getting nowhere, until one evening I felt the answer to be right there at my fingertips, ready to break through at any moment. I grew excited and spread all my various research notes into categories before me, knowing the answer was there if I just had the strength of mind to hammer it through. Finally, long after midnight I leaned back, exhausted, my enthusiasm spent and nothing accomplished as the answer eluded me yet again. In the most genuine and spontaneous prayer of my life I called out, 'Oh God, what is the purpose of play in our life?'

"With no warning, a wave of energy swept my body from my feet up and I found myself physically propelled at tremendous speed into an infinite black space slowly populated by a universe of unending stars and galaxies. I was tossed again and again, gently and playfully in an exhilarating but helpless fashion, much like a juggler tosses a ball or a father his child, from one end of this vastness to the other in joyful exhilaration. This ecstatic experience went on and an and I found myself shouting out, over and over, "God is playing with me!" After what seemed an endless time, the event slowly wound down, the starry space dissipated, and my room formed around me. I wept for a long while afterward from sheer gratitude, awe, and wonder over such a gift. From that point on, however, I knew that play was the whole reason for and essence of life---not just for children, but for all God's children, whatever their age; and I understood that our great model's observation that we must become again as little children meant precisely what it said. But I also knew that our refusal to play and our prevention of play in children, our insistence on forcing them into defensive procedures, were evils of long standing..."

Until next time...
