Please Don't Sniff the Essences!
by Nanci Wesling
"Essences" and "essential oils" are often mistaken for each other. Today you'll learn what some of the differences are, then find out more about my passion, which is essences.
The main difference is this: ESSENCES capture the subtle patterns of nature in pure water, and are usually taken internally. ESSENTIAL OILS are made by pressing, distilling, or otherwise extracting the chemical constituents from plant parts, and are usually used externally. Other differences include:
have no fragrance or chemical constituents, only potentized water and a stabilizer (alcohol or herbal)
work at the most subtle levels of body, mind, soul and emotions to restore wholenes
are safe and easy to use, even for babies, children, and animals, and are free of side effects
are effective precisely because of their fragrance and chemical properties
contain chemical constituents that cause therapeutic effects in the body/mind
require personal knowledge or the advice of an experienced practitioner for safe use
A Brief History of Essences
Modern flower essences were developed in the 1930's by Dr. Edward Bach, a physician in England. In the last 25 years the field has expanded to include gems and minerals, environmental phenomenon, animals, and sacred geometry.
Dr. Bach was a pathologist and bacteriologist who had a genuine love for people and nature. Keenly observant, he recognized that his patients' emotional response to their condition affected their recovery. He stated "the personality of the individual was of even more importance than the body in the treatment of his disease." (1)
Today, we call this the body/mind connection. Or you may have heard the terms holistic or "whole-person." The unseen aspects of you-your emotions, mind and soul-are crucial to your well-being. While you are undeniably a biochemical, biomechanical physical body, you are also bioenergetic and what I call "biospiritual." This "Whole of You" longs for an integrated approach to health care.
This is where essences come in. They are gifts from nature that heal your emotions and help restore harmony to your life.
Why I Love Nature and Flower Essences, and Why You Will, Too!
Essences specifically and directly affect the "Whole of You" in two primary ways: 1) they reconnect your body's electrical system, and 2) they give your mind something to think about while your body does what it is designed to do, which is heal itself.
What is your electrical system? It is an intricate network of electrical pathways that runs parallel to your circulatory system (2). In many ways it's similar to the wiring in your home. When the circuits are connected, they work fine. When they are overloaded, they don't. If you insist on plugging three space heaters into one outlet, you'll blow a circuit. In the same way, if you continually overload your system with negative self-talk, poor quality food, or general neglect, your electrical system will suffer. When your electrical system suffers, you suffer. The power of essences is their ability to reconnect electrical circuits and restore wholeness.
Everything in Nature is Unique
A daffodil is not a horse is not a diamond is not a full moon. Each of these expressions of life has its own unique characteristics both physically and energetically. If you had a device sensitive enough to measure the vibration of a flower or stone, you would discover that each has it's own unique frequency. It is this frequency, resonating and harmonizing with the part of you that is out of balance, that promotes healing.
Nature's greatest gifts are available to you in the natural world. Every flower, stone, and tree offers healing every day, and essences give you access to these gifts in an easy-to-use form. Truly, nature has an answer to your every need.
As you recognize the power of your mind and emotions to contribute to the health of your body, essences become an invaluable tool for wellness. Because they help you deal with the underlying emotional disharmony present in all physical illness, they are a gentle yet powerful addition to every health care regimen. Essences clarify emotional issues, past and present, and help you let go of unwanted patterns and behaviors.
And they are so easy to use: take them by the drop, spray them onto your body or into your personal space, put drops in your bath... there are many, many ways to use them. Trust your imagination; the possibilities are limitless.
You will find that essences support all of your family including your children, animal companions, plants, even the Earth Herself. Essences are a magnificent tool for affirming your connection with all of life, healing your emotions, and expanding your awareness. I invite you to experience them for yourself!
"I was first introduced to essences in 1987, and began making them in 1992. Ongoing research has given me a tremendous awareness of the healing powers within Nature, and a profound understanding of Nature's willingness to help us on our soul's journey. Since 1992, I have produced more than 275 essences in a co-creative partnership with nature. I am honored and humbled that nature would so willingly join with me in this work."
